Ebay Used Wire Feed Welders Campbell Hasfeld

  1. Harbor Freight vs Campbell Hausfeld

Hello I am new here. I know one of these is a 110 and the other is a 220 but I have a question. I am a strictly hobby welder and am in the market for a wire welder. I can buy a refurbished Chicago Electric 220 volt 110 amp from Harbor Freight or I can buy a refurbished 110 volt 70 amp Campbell Hausfeld from their website. I will mostly be working on thinner guage metal but will occasionally weld angle iron or pipe or tubing. I fear that the 70 amp welder might not cut it when it comes to those applications. Who here own either or both and can give me some input. Thanks, Charlie

I struggled with a campbell hausfeld welder for a couple years. The 70 amp will not turn down low enough on the low setting (it only has a low and high setting right?),to weld thin stuff. I finally gave up and bought a lincoln pro mig 180, big upgrade but MUCH better machine. I still dont know what I'm doing but I'm doing much better with this machine. good luck.

Try this site for a welder. I had a Harbor Freight and sold it and got a Clarke, Night and day difference.

Thank you Zobman. That looks like a good site

  5. Re: Harbor Freight vs Campbell Hausfeld

It's worth the extra money to get a little bigger welder. I have an old lincoln sp100 that is much better than the CH or HF welders and you can usually find them fairly cheap on craigslist or ebay.

Charlie, i am with Littlefuzz on this. If you can, locate a brand name little mig or stick welder. The arc quality is usually MUCH better. I swear, though its' all just electricity, its' not all the same. Also, the adjustability in the units will work much better, and the unit will be more responsive. Look for a Lincoln, miller, or Hobart. These are the easiest to find, and have the best availability for service if you need it.

And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.

If you are going to be looking at AC buzz boxes, I would personally hunt down a used Miller Thunderbolt AC. They can be had for 50 - 100 bucks in great shape on craigslist. Guys buy them, then eventually upgrade to AC/DC units. If you can deal with the more limited rod selection and poorer arc quality, than you can get one helluva nice welder doing that.

Also if you are very new to welding, I don't think an underpowered AC arc welder is the way to get started. Buy something that has a decent duty cycle at 100 - 120 amps - at least 50% or so. That will give you time to practice and get good before turning it down and getting better at lower amperages. AC in general is trickier at lower amperages I find but that could just be me.

If you go for wire feed though the Dual MIG 151 is a great starter welder. I'm not anti harbor-freight, but stick welding is hard enough with a good welder for a novice, let alone somebody who doesn't have a lot of experience.

  8. Re: Harbor Freight vs Campbell Hausfeld

I'm self taught, and probably full of a lot of mis information.

If you absolutely know that you'll be working with stuff around 1/8 or less. The wire welder is a good thing. It's also a lot easier to run and make a good looking bead.

I'm kinda funny in that I like to see a big ol' blue burnt spot on the backside of anything I weld. I know I got enough heat in the iron. On heavier stock the small wire welders just don't seem to have the juice to get the heat into the steel. I don't know about other metals, I only work with mild steel and cast iron. Cast iron's another story.

I learned on a stick AC welder, and when I bought the little Hobart 135 I had one heck of a time holding my hand still, and not pushing the gun into the work.

Idiots shouldn't give advice. Feel free to disregard

  9. Re: Harbor Freight vs Campbell Hausfeld

Campbell Hausfeld is just starting to distribute a new line of wire welders.....They are along the lines of their Maxus line of tools, just badged as C/H. It's my understanding these units(which look like a Hobart Handler) will probably replace the older style C/H line of wire welders. TSC will stock them as well as the Maxus line.

I looked at the wire feed assembly in the Maxus wire welders and the feeder is a cast metal assembly that resembles a Miller wire feeder. I can't say how the Maxus welders function, only that they looked as good as if not better than the Hobart Handlers side by side. The Hobart units in each size were only a little more $$$ than the Maxus units and not enough to get me to purchase the Maxus over a Hobart.

I did buy one of the new style C/H units NIB on ebay for almost nothing since nobody else bid,but UPS dropped it in transit and a wire came unplugged inside. I haven't had time to get it to a repair facility & have no intention of trying to repair it and doing something wrong. I will say it looks very good cosmetically and looks very close to my HH125 in fit & finish....Considering what I paid,I'm pleased. I doubt I'd have given the almost $300 retail for it,but that thought may change after I try it out.

The Model# is WF2150 on mine(flux core) and the sister mig (gas) is WG2160. I assume these fit just under the HH125 units, but I would think they are going to have to price these lower to compete in that nich.

Does anyone know if the C/H line is made in the USA or made in China? Hard to justify their price if made in China.

    Lincoln just makes welding machnes.
    Miller just makes welding machines.

    Think about that.

  12. Re: Harbor Freight vs Campbell Hausfeld

I have been using a Maxus 413 (220 Volt) welder for the last 2 years. I have a small business, and was starting to worry that I might have issues if my Hobart 180 died in the middle of a weekend production project - so I picked up this Maxus. Let me put it this way - the Hobart has not been used since I first used the Maxus. There is that much difference in the weld quality and smoothness of weld. Much reduced spatter. The Maxus and hobart are almost identical machines as far as function goes, but I have had much fewer issues with the drive system and the wire welding to the tip - causing bird nests at the drive system. In fact, come to think of it, I have not had 1 birdnest in the drive system (knock on wood).

The Maxus is just as heavy as the Hobart, and I run it VERY hard. I have projects where I weld 12 inches of bead on 1/8" angle iron for a good hour plus at a time.

I am even considering picking up the Maxus 308 - 140 Amp 120Volt - for a more portable solution when I go to a customer that only has 120 volt hookup.

Don't get me wrong, this isn't a replacement for the high dollar Lincoln's and Miller's of the world with Stitch weld timers and spot timers - but bang for the buck cannot be beat. I am sold.

You are misinformed on both. Do more research and you will see that both companies manufacture more than just welding machines.
